43) The "Man Who Created the Valley" is Gone
The issue of Intel USA’s company magazine, Inteleads, in memory of Robert
Noyce (Click to enlarge)
Robert Noyce, who was called "the man who created the Silicon Valley"
and was admired as "an extraordinary engineer who was made by the semiconductor
industry", suddenly passed away on June 3, 1990.
He died suddenly of a heart attack while staying in Austin, Texas as CEO of
a public and private joint venture company, "SEMATECH", aiming to
revive the US semiconductor industry that lagged behind Japan. He also served
as Vice President of Intel at the same time, which, perhaps, created an exhausting
and stressful environment.
In response to the request from Intel's headquarters, I contributed a memorial
writing to the special issue of Inteleads for Noyce, saying that "While
Bob Noyce was an exceptionally talented and aggressive engineer at the same
time, however, he was gentle at heart and never forgot to smile." I was
quite surprised and at the same time felt grateful to find my comment posted
on the first page surrounded by eight pictures of Noyce.
